Strategies to address hypertension

The high burden of disease and low awareness have led The Pan-African Society of Cardiology (PASCAR) to declare hypertension as an area of priority to reduce heart disease and stroke on the continent.7 PASCAR aims to improve the detection, treatment, and control of hypertension in Sub-Saharan Africa by 2025.7

A strategy proposed by the World Health Organization to improve the detection and control of blood pressure is pharmacists and nurses working together to provide drug treatment after undergoing proper training, approval by prescribing authority, following a specific management protocol, and physician oversight.1 The recommendation for this approach is because there is no evidence of differences in hypertension management between physician and non-physician healthcare professionals.1
