Diabetes is an increasing global problem, estimated to have affected 463 million people in 2019.

This number is projected to reach 578 million people by 2030, and 700 million by 2045.

By 2045 Africa is projected to rank 4th globally with the highest increase in the prevalence of diabetes among adults, and the highest in the prevalence of impaired glucose tolerance.

Effective management of T2D include:

  • regular screening of individuals at risk,
  • prompt diagnosis and treatment to achieve a glycemic target
  • healthy lifestyle choices to reduce modifiable risk factors

A hypothetical patient case, Tunde, will be used to illustrate the application of these guideline recommendations in the clinical setting.
