Global burden of hypertension

Hypertension affects approximately 1.4 billion people worldwide.1 Less than half (42%) of adults with hypertension are diagnosed and treated.2 In 2017, hypertension accounted for 10.4 million deaths making it the leading risk factor for death.3 Also, hypertension is a strong predictor of ischemic heart disease (IHD) and stroke. The World Health Organization (WHO) identifies IHD and stroke as the top 2 causes of death worldwide.4 Despite the considerable burden of hypertension, and the availability of drugs for its management, only 14% of affected individuals have their blood pressure under control.1
